History

The Christodoulio Foundation has been operational for over seventy years. Its life began in 1943, in the hard years of the German occupation. The hunger, the misfortunes, the executions of the conquerors drove an enlightened person, father Apostolos Christodoulou, to embrace the orphan children and protect them from hunger, thirst, indigence and war. So, he gathered his flock and with undivided love he announced his thoughts to help the children. “We must in every way help each other in order to survive.”, were the words father Apostolos kept saying, being a man both gifted and with knowledge of the situation at that time.

In 1943 the confraternity by the name “Epignosis” (“Awareness”) was established. Awareness of the love of the will of God, awareness of the truth, awareness of the mission of man on earth. Thus, “Epignosis” was started at number 3 St. Spiridonos street in Aigaleo, where father Apostolos would deliver sermons, discuss, confess, do grand spiritual work.

His fiery sermons supported thousands. But his bigest work was the house of the children, the Christodouleio Foundation, that got its name from him. The dream takes form and Calvary begins. Circumstances were unfavorable and money non-existent but the love was abundant. Slowly the dream takes form and the first children find shelter, food, snugness and above all, love. The years here hard and everything was poor but the children’s smiles started to disperse the black veil of orphanhood and poverty.

In 1980 the old buildings were demolished and in their place was raised a two story building with comfortable beds and contemporary specifications. All these of course with the help of friends and patrons of the Foundation. Father Apostolos carried out this task with difficulties and hardships, until 1985, when he ascended to the heavens. His coworkers, anything but random people, continued that work with the same love and warmth. Mr. Michael Karvelas, Mrs. Ksanthoula Karvela and Mrs. Evangelia Kritsali. The worthy successors took over the work with respect and continued the course of the confraternity and the orphanage, on his steps but with new ideas and great appetite for work. Right after the ascendance of father Apostolos, the new board of directors was established with Mr. Michael N. Karvelas as President.

The new administration, with the help of friends and patrons of the foundation, demolished in 1990 the rest of the old buildings and raised a new wing in continuation to the existing with basement, ground and first floor. In the buildings and all spaces of the Foundation air conditioning and fire safety systems were installed. The Temple was mostly covered with hagiographies and the outside spaces were paved and landscaped with playgrounds etc. Under the presidency of Mr. Michael Karvelas, some real estate was acquired by the foundation.

Evangelia Kritsalis

In the 3rd of November 2005 Mrs. Evangelia Kritsali, after an unequal struggle with cancer, left us at the early age of 71. The dearly departed Evangelia was the right hand of Father Apostolos and worthy successor along with Mr. Michael Karvelas. Her life was dedicated to the work of the Foundation. Day and night she was close to the children and took care of their good health, their physical and spiritual evolution as well as their progress and   social and professional development. The dearly departed was the soul of the Foundation and the confraternity “Epignosis”. She was President of the confraternity for a number of years.

After the ascendance of the dearly departed Evangelia Kritsali, the general board of the confraternity elected the new board of directors with Mrs. Akrivi Kaklamani-Alepi as President. Worthy successor of the dearly departed Evangelia. With the exceptional cooperation of the members of the board of directors of the confraternity, the social and spiritual work of the confraternity is successfully continued, supporting the work of the orphanage.

Michael N. Karvelas

10th of December 2010. The day we all said goodbye to a man who in all his life with faith and respect to the high values, President of the Christodoulio Orphanage, Mr. Michael N. Karvelas, values we all owe to respect and serve. “Father”, the children called him. He lost the struggle with death, which no one conquers. But he won acknowledgement in his struggle in life and that is how we shall always stay in our memories. He left the struggle, leaving a work with sturdy foundations. The principles he served are certain to continue to dominate in the foundation and beyond.

He was a distinguished personality in our society, with responsibility, impartiality and devotion to the Foundation and society. He was distinguished for his kindness, geniality, goodness and love for fellow people. He loved the children, that says in all. His form, his mellow countenance and his good word will always stay in everyone’s memory.

After the ascendance of the dearly departed Michael N. Karvelas, the board of directors of the confraternity “Epignosis” covered the position with a new member and the presidency of the Christodoulio Orphanage was taken over by Mrs. Akrivi Kaklamani-Alepi, worthy coworker and right hand of the dearly departed Michael Karvelas. The need of quick adjustment is necessary for all, so the continuation of the grand work we received can be assured on the course that he has plotted.

Deeply touched and in great pain we said our fairwells to the late Akrivi Kaklamanis Alepis, President of the Board of Directors of the Christodoulio Foundation and the union “Awareness”, for a number of years. During her Presidency many important renovations were completed, such as the replacement of the doors, windows and the central gate as well as the renovation of the mess hall of the Institution.

Following the loss of the late Akrivi Kaklamanis Alepis, the general assembly of the union “Awareness” elected a new President for its Board of Directors, Mrs. Manousis Vassiliki, a worthy successor of the deceased. The new Board of Directors of the union “Awareness” filled in the place of the Christodoulio Foundation Board of Directors  with a new member and Presidency of the Christodoulio Foundation was assigned to Mr. Christoforakis Georgios, a worthy coworker of the late Akrivi Kaklamanis Alepis, the late Michail Karvelas and the late Evangelia Krytsalis, for a number of years.
